4 Ways to Fix HDMI Port Not Working On Laptop

1. Check your Hardware

Your HDMI port not working on your laptop may simply be a hardware failure. When there is damaged or corrupted hardware, it can easily cause an error in your HDMI experience. Thus, you should follow these steps below

Check your HDMI cable

Ensure that your HDMI cable is not damaged and be sure that it’s properly connected with your laptop and HDMI device. Also, be sure that your HDMI cable is compatible with your System or another HDMI device.

Check your HDMI ports.

Check and make sure that the HDMI ports of your Windows System and other HDMI devices are in good and working condition. Damaged or corrupted HDMI ports might cause an error that restricts your HDMI to work on your laptop or computer properly.

2. Restart and Reconnect your Devices

Sometimes, the HDMI not working issue is not due to any hardware problem but simply because of improper bootup of devices. If your Laptop or Hdmi device doesn’t boot well, it can result in your HDMI not working.

Thus, you should restart your systems and re-plug your devices with HDMI. You can follow the steps below to make sure you do everything right:

First turn on your HDMI device i.e. speaker, TV, etc., and only then turn on your Laptop or Windows PC. when you’ve turned on all the devices, turn off your HDMI devices again while keeping your Windows System on. Next, unplug all the HDMI connections, and plug them again with your HDMI device to your Windows PC.  What this will do is to refresh your HDMI connection and try to fix the issue where your HDMI port is not working.

3. Check if your HDMI Device is set as the Default Device

Another way to fix and enable HDMI on your laptop is to check if your HDMI device is set as the default or not. Most times, your HDMI device won’t work if it’s not set as a default device for your Windows system. Hence, the HDMI device you want should be set as a default device. Follow the steps below to do this

Step 1. On the Home screen on your Laptop or computer, go to the “Volume icon” on Taskbar and Right-click on it.

Step 2. A mini “Sound” window will open. Once it opens, go to the “Playback” tab. Below the Playback tab, all your playback devices will be listed, including your system’s  HDMI devices and integrated playback speakers.

Step 3. Finally, click on the HDMI device you want to set as default. Lastly, click on “Set Default” and then click on “Ok“.

4. Update or Reinstall your Graphics Driver

Graphic Drivers are partly responsible for displaying content. If there is an issue with the graphic drivers, it can mean the failure of the system in communicating the data between the HDMI device and your System. Thus, you have to update or reinstall your Graphic drivers to fix the problem. Follow the steps below to do so

Step 1. From the Home-screen of your laptop, go to the search panel on the TaskBar and search for “Device Manager“. Click on the “Device Manager” option that has a thumbnail in the search results.

Step 2. On the Device Manager window, you’ll see all the output, input, and other necessary devices and components of your laptop or computer listed.

Step 3. To update the Graphics Drivers, click on the “Display Adapters” option and left-click on the Arrow to see your Graphics Device. Next, right-click on the Graphics Device and proceed with the “Update Drivers” option you’ll see. To successfully update the Graphic drivers, follow the on-screen instructions.

If you had already updated your driver before or you already have up-to-date Graphic drivers, you might try other options like Disable and Reenable the Drivers, or Uninstall and Reinstall the graphic drivers so as to fix the issue of HDMI cable not working on laptops.
